Here is a quick and easy fix for this issue
Published on May 28, 2008 By LittleBearJason In Windows XP

It might not be officially known why Windows Update ceases to function after installing Windows XP SP3 , for some anyway. But a solution has been surfaced that I found on Google which is very effective at making it work.

Taken from the link here: http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/showarticle.aspx?articleid=38&ln=en&IsMu=False

Resolutions
1. Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below
  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wups2.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Attempt to run Windows Update

Well that was not so bad. Its so easy , in fact you can open up a command window, copy the list of dll files to re-register. and then right click in the cmd window and paste, and it does it automatically. You might get a little bit of mini spam however.

Always a good idea to use genuine MS Software eh?

I tried installing SP3 but my PC kept restarting, so I just decided to reinstall SP2 and leave it at that. Besides, what was wrong with SP2 anyway? Absolutely nothing!
